Q: What does C-TPAT/PIP stand for, and why is it important?
A: C-TPAT stands for Customs-Trade Partnership against Terrorism. It is a joint U.S. government-business initiative to build cooperative relationships that strengthen overall supply chain and border security. C-TPAT recognizes that Customs can provide the highest level of security only through close cooperation with the ultimate owners of the supply chain, importers, carriers, brokers, warehouse operators and manufacturers.

Through this initiative, they ask businesses to ensure the integrity of their security practices and communicate their security guidelines to their business partners. This program is similar to the Partners in Protection (PIP) program that Canada Customs and Revenue Agency has implemented.

Q: Why are some carriers not CTPAT-PIP approved?
A: CPTAT-PIP certification is a rigorous endeavour. Partners in these organizations must be committed to the highest standards of best practice in their business. The most likely reason for a carrier not being qualified for CTPAT-PIP certification is that they are unwilling, or unable to meet the demands for capital investment in facility security, driver training, and strict process management required to join and maintain membership in the partnership.

Bison Transport (and Bison ABL) have been CTPAT-PIP certified since February 2004.
